Dark Shadows was, like all Burton movies, absolutely astoundingly entertainingly gorgeous to look at, mostly because of the visual juxtapositions that carried the film. The costumes, lighting, sets, special effects, makeup- it was designed absolutely perfectly. I had a great time and often exclaimed “that is fucking awesome” out loud. The only thing is, once the movie ended, I was not blown away and it wasn’t posessing my mind like a great film tends to do- I think its weakness was that it had too many elements- even though they were good elements- combined into one movie and it muddled the story a bit. The tone of the movie changed so quickly with each scene, it did feel a little scattered. The one thing that tied the entire movie together was the visuals, and everything else seemed to be less fluid. However, being that I am a very visual creature and I can thoroughly enjoy a movie just because it is beautiful, I give Dark Shadows a thumbs up. It’s one of those movies you should see in the theater where you can enjoy this new world unlike anything in your reality today. It truly was a feast for the eyes, and I did laugh quite often as well. The climax was absolutely stunning, maybe a little busy, but full of effects that just inspired the shit outta me.
